To cheer up the interior of a house during the dreary winter months, try forcing bloom on woody branches.
To get the best success, try pruning a 1 to 2 foot long section of branch about 6 weeks before the natural bloom time.
Submerge the branches in warm water overnight, re-cutting the ends in the morning and placing them in a vase of room temperature water in a bright location. Flowers should appear within a few weeks. In January try cutting Forsythia or Witch Hazel. In February try Redbud, Crabapple, Cherry and Plum. To add fragrance to a room try Lilacs or Honeysuckle.
