Eliminate the negative. (Or at least hide it really well.) Sometimes, a simple solution can drastically improve things, such as an imaginative evergreen planting bed that doubles as a privacy screen. Other times, a more involved project, such as a multi-tiered retaining wall, can create a functional, beautiful outdoor space where you never thought it was possible.

Make a great first impression. If what you are most interested in is real-estate value, then start your renovations in your front yard or roadside view.

Keep what works. If you already have a large dogwood, wisteria, or some other interesting plant, see if it can work into your refurbishment plans. Mature trees and shrubs help landscaping feel grown in, even when it's newly installed.

Be forward thinking. Consider how your refurbished property will look after it matures a few years. It would be a shame to pull up plants just because they grew well.
